ELMHURST – The knee is one of the most complex joints in the human body so it’s not surprising that no two are exactly the same. It also stands to reason that there shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all solution for total knee replacement procedures.
The subtle anatomical differences from person-to-person are typically of no concern – unless you are one of the more than 580,000 people each year who undergo a total knee replacement procedure. Then, you will want a solution that accounts for variations and is designed specifically for you.
“This is a fairly new procedure, but it is going to become the standard,” said Ryon Hennessy, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon on the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Medical Staff who is now using MRI technology to create personalized cutting guides for total knee replacements.
Dr. Hennessy will explain the traditional procedure for total knee replacement and introduce this new personalized procedure during "Signature MRI - Total Knee Joint Replacement," a free event at the Elmhurst Memorial Center for Health at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 13.
“Performing this customized procedure results in a better fitting implant,” Dr. Hennessy said. “A better fit leads to increased comfort and faster recovery time. We also believe that the implants will last longer because they are properly positioned in the knee, which reduces wear and tear. Overall, it’s just a better way of doing things for our patients.”
During the presentation, Dr. Hennessy will also discuss the benefits of total knee joint replacement, surgical preparation and post-operative care. The event is free, but registration is required by clicking here or calling CareMatch at (630) 782-7878.
